Search "aftermarket push button start" and you'll find a dozen companies all using the same four words: secure, universal, OEM-quality, easy install.
Marketing copy is free. Published specifications are not — a company only prints a relay amperage, a wire gauge, or an encryption architecture when the hardware can actually back it up.
So this comparison uses one rule: if a number isn't published by the manufacturer, it doesn't count. Every figure below links to its source.

1. The relay question — the one that actually breaks systems
This is the single most important spec in a keyless ignition system, and it's the one almost nobody publishes.
Your ignition switch isn't a signal wire. It carries the full current load of your ignition system, fuel pump, ECU, and — during crank — a starter solenoid. On a classic car, the factory ignition switch was fed by heavy-gauge wire for exactly this reason.
Digital Guard Dawg publishes the numbers:
· PBS-I and PBS-II: onboard 60A high-current relays mounted on a 4oz copper chassis, with 12-gauge bus-insulated wiring sized to match the high-current ignition wiring already in classic vehicles
· iKey Premier: 40A on each of two ignition outputs, 20A internal door lock/unlock relays, with redundant +12V and redundant ground, both landing directly on the battery terminals — confirmed in the published install manual
The relays are inside the module. That matters more than the amperage itself. DGD's product pages describe external relay wiring as "unsightly and failure prone" — and they're right. Every external relay is another crimp, another splice, another connection sitting under a dash absorbing 15 years of heat cycling and vibration, waiting to become an intermittent no-start that takes a shop three hours to trace.
How the field compares: Watson's StreetWorks WI-75 publishes a fob range (5–200 feet) and eight sensitivity increments — but no relay rating and no wire gauge. VAIS Technology's SEER page describes encryption and PKE behavior, but publishes no current handling specification. Budget import kits publish none of it.
When you're feeding a starter solenoid, "we didn't say" is not a spec.
2. Encryption: named architecture vs. the word "proprietary"
Digital Guard Dawg publishes exactly what's inside:

That's a named silicon vendor, a named encryption architecture, and a stated keyspace. You can look up the vendor. You can evaluate the architecture.
Dual-frequency is the meaningful part. A single-frequency system has one conversation to intercept. DFDE runs the exchange across two frequencies with two encryption layers — DGD's documentation describes this as preventing interception by "code grabbers."
How the field compares: VAIS states its SEER system uses "proprietary encryption that is more secure than standard OEM systems" and protects against relay attacks — but publishes no chipset, no keyspace, and no architecture name to evaluate that against. Watson's describes its system as "RFID" without further detail. Budget kits typically publish nothing at all.
"Proprietary" is not a specification. It's a way of not answering the question.
3. Nobody else covers this many vehicles
Most competitors build for one thing: a 12-volt car.

12 volts. 24 volts. 48 volts. Gas and diesel. IP67-rated buttons for marine and off-road. No other aftermarket keyless brand publishes a catalog that crosses those boundaries — the rest of the field builds a car product.
And it compounds: one DGD fob can be coded to operate every DGD system you own. Your hot rod, your bike, your boat, and your golf cart on one fob. A competitor who only builds car modules structurally cannot offer that.
4. Losing the fob: solved, and published
Every proximity system faces the same question — what happens when the fob is lost, dead, or in the washing machine?
Digital Guard Dawg's answer ships in the box on every PBS and iKey system: an Emergency Bypass Card and a user-programmable PIN code. DGD calls this feature exclusive to their systems. Replacements are $15 — keep one in your wallet and the failure mode is a minor inconvenience instead of a tow truck.
The fobs themselves are dual-mode: passive (the car responds as you walk up) and active (press the button manually). Two ways to authenticate, so one failing doesn't strand you. Fob batteries are standard replaceable lithium cells with about a one-year life.
Watson's publishes a comparable hidden-button override, and Autowatch Ghost uses a scratch-card emergency code. Budget kits vary, and many publish no documented recovery path at all — which is worth knowing before it's raining.
5. The classic-car problems only DGD engineered around
Three details on the PBS product pages tell you these systems were built by people who actually wire hot rods:
MSD filtering. PBS-I and PBS-II include internal MSD filtering circuitry. If you've run a high-output ignition box near sensitive electronics, you know exactly why — MSD boxes throw electrical noise that makes unfiltered modules behave erratically. DGD filters it on the board. No competitor in this comparison publishes an equivalent.
Accessory dropout during crank. The PBS control module drops one accessory circuit during starter crank to reduce current draw, while keeping the second one live for ECUs and computers that must not lose power mid-start. That's a deliberate two-circuit design solving a real problem — a single-accessory-circuit system has to choose between browning out the starter and rebooting your ECU.
Full ignition emulation. ACC only / ACC + IGN / START, all from one button, replicating everything the original key switch did. Not a starter trigger — an actual ignition switch replacement.
6. Where DGD's competitors fit — and why DGD still wins
Viper, Compustar, Directed Electronics build alarms and remote start. They don't build RFID push-button ignition. This isn't a competition DGD loses — it's one DGD absorbed. Keep the alarm, add the ignition.

Autowatch Ghost is a CAN-bus immobiliser that requires you to enter a PIN on your existing steering wheel and console buttons. It has a real niche — but note what it cannot do: it communicates with the ECU over the CAN data circuit, which means it cannot be fitted to a pre-CAN vehicle at all. Every classic, hot rod, resto-mod, Humvee, boat, golf cart, and piece of heavy equipment on this page is outside its reach. It also adds no convenience — you're still turning a key, plus typing a PIN. DGD adds security and removes the key.
Budget import kits advertise PKE and push start for a fraction of the price. The most telling document in this tier is the manufacturer's own manual. One widely sold universal PKE kit's user manual states plainly: "This device can improve the vehicle safety level, but could not prevent the vehicle from stolen or the occurrence of unexpected accidents" — EASYGUARD EC002 Series user manual.
Read that again. The manufacturer is disclaiming theft prevention in the manual for a product sold as an anti-theft system.
Digital Guard Dawg's systems are built around a hardware immobilizer that physically prevents the engine from starting without an authenticated fob — and DGD publishes the encryption architecture and current ratings that back it up. The savings on a budget kit are real. So is what the manual says you're buying.
7. Made in the USA, with a phone number that works
Digital Guard Dawg is a California corporation, established 2006, operating from Roseville, California. Product pages carry "Proudly made in the USA" and "Proudly Designed, Engineered, and Assembled in USA."
That's not a flag-waving line — it's a support model. There's a toll-free number, 1-877-246-5395, staffed Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm Pacific, by people who work where the boards are built. The site also publishes interactive troubleshooting flowcharts and full install manuals for every system, free, before you buy.
Digital Guard Dawg further states that its RFID systems have been supplied to law enforcement agencies, the US Presidential Motorcade, and US Special Forces, and the PBS-II product page lists Hennessey Performance, Revology Cars, Gateway Bronco, and Ringbrothers among the builders using it.

Everyone else asks you to trust an adjective.
