RFID vs. a Basic Push Button: One Starts Your Car, the Other Starts Anyone's

There are two products on the market wearing the same name, and the difference between them is the difference between a security upgrade and a security hole.
A basic push button start replaces your ignition switch with a button. Press it, the engine starts.
An RFID push button start replaces your ignition switch with a button that first checks whether you're authorized, and refuses to do anything if you aren't.
Both are sold as "push button start kits." Only one of them is an anti-theft device. The other quietly removes the one you had.
What a non-RFID kit actually does to your security
Think about what a mechanical key ignition really was. It was two things wearing one hat: a switch and a lock. Turning it started the car. The lock cylinder made sure only the person with the right key could turn it.
A bare push button kit replaces the switch and deletes the lock.
The result: the ignition of your vehicle is now a button that works for whoever presses it. If the button is on the dash, it's visible. If the installer hid it, you've traded a lock for the hope that nobody finds a switch — which is not security, it's a guessing game with one guess and no penalty for wrong answers.
On a classic car with no factory immobilizer, this is a straight downgrade. You started with a lock cylinder. Now you have a doorbell.
What RFID adds
RFID — Radio Frequency Identification — puts the lock back, in a form that can't be picked, drilled, or copied at a hardware store.
The module and the fob run a cryptographic conversation. The engine circuit stays physically immobilized until that conversation succeeds. The button becomes inert hardware — pressing it without an authorized fob present does nothing at all.

Dual-frequency is the substantive part. A single-frequency system has one exchange to intercept. DFDE splits the exchange across two frequencies with two encryption layers — DGD's documentation describes this as blocking interception by "code grabbers."
And this is a named architecture from a named silicon vendor with a stated keyspace. Most competitors describe their encryption as "proprietary," which is a word, not a specification.

Where this matters most: cars with no factory immobilizer
Modern cars usually have a factory transponder immobilizer, so a bare push button kit installed alongside it doesn't fully remove authentication.
Classics, hot rods, resto-mods, LS swaps, boats, ATVs, golf carts, and motorcycles frequently have none. On those vehicles the ignition lock cylinder was the entire theft protection, and a non-RFID button deletes it outright.
Which is precisely why RFID belongs on exactly the vehicles most likely to get a push button conversion — a six-figure resto-mod should not be protected by a button that works for everybody.
Digital Guard Dawg's classic-car systems build the immobilizer in:

Two more things RFID gives you that a bare button never will
Hands-free operation
DGD's fobs are dual-mode — passive and active. In passive mode you don't touch anything: walk up and the system authenticates and authorizes the ignition; walk away and it re-arms and immobilizes automatically.
That last part is the security argument nobody makes loudly enough. It is impossible to forget to arm it. Every alarm ever sold depends on a human being remembering to press a button, and humans reliably don't. A system that arms itself the moment you walk away removes the failure mode entirely.
One credential for everything you own
A single DGD fob can be coded to operate every Digital Guard Dawg system you own — the hot rod, the bike, the boat, the golf cart, the UTV. One fob, one pocket.
Or don't carry a fob at all. The Watch Dawg ($199) hides the fob inside a wristwatch — compatible with the KIM, M1, AT-1, AT-1FX, PBS-M, PBS-MX, PBS-MXS, M24, GC12 and GC48 systems.
"But what if I lose the fob?"
The right question, and the one to ask before buying — because on some systems the honest answer is "call a tow truck."

DGD describes this feature as exclusive to their systems. Spare cards are $15. Spare fobs run $42–79 depending on the system, and fob batteries are standard replaceable lithium cells with about a one-year life.
The OEM-style fob even includes a hidden compartment for a "hide-a-key" blade.
RFID beats Bluetooth and phone-based systems too
A newer category of kits uses Bluetooth or a smartphone app as the credential. Convenient — but you've now made your ignition dependent on a phone that can go flat, get stolen, update its OS, lose an app, or drop off cellular.
DGD's FAQ makes the case directly: RFID operates on dedicated frequencies with hardware-level encryption, requiring no smartphone, no battery-draining app, and no cellular connectivity. A phone is a general-purpose computer running software you didn't write. An RFID fob is a sealed credential that does exactly one thing.
Want the immobilizer without changing your ignition at all?
Not every vehicle needs a push button conversion. If you just want the authentication layer, DGD sells the immobilizer standalone:
