Your Humvee Didn't Come With a Key. Here's the Fix That Isn't a Padlock.

Every civilian HMMWV owner discovers this the same way — usually about ten minutes after taking delivery.
There is no ignition key. The stock M998 uses a lever-type 24-volt ignition switch. You move the lever, you push the starter, the truck runs. That's the whole security model. The official parts nomenclature says it plainly: the factory part is a "SWITCH, IGNITION WITHOUT LEVER (24 VOLT)".
This made complete sense in service. A tactical vehicle in a secured motor pool, operated by rotating crews, in situations where fumbling for a key could be genuinely dangerous — a key was an operational liability, not a security feature.
Then the truck gets surplused. Now it's parked on a residential street, at a trailhead, or in a show field, and the security model is "anyone who knows how a Humvee works can drive it away."
Why the usual fixes don't work
Aftermarket keyed ignition switches. The obvious answer, and the one with a well-documented failure mode. Owner communities consistently warn that inexpensive keyed switches aren't built for the loads and voltage a HMMWV puts on the run circuit, and there are repeated reports of damaged starters and EESS boxes traced back to them.
There's a specific electrical trap too: you need 24V at the run position while cranking, or the fuel solenoid loses power and the engine won't start. Plenty of cheap switches don't maintain run power during crank — which produces a truck that cranks enthusiastically and never fires, and an owner chasing a fuel system problem that doesn't exist.
Hidden kill switches. Security by obscurity. One guess, no penalty for a wrong answer, and every Humvee forum discusses the popular hiding spots.
Steering locks and chains. Visible deterrents on a vehicle designed to shrug off obstacles.
A GPS tracker. Tells you where your Humvee went. Doesn't stop it going.
The DGD-I-24

Why RFID rather than a key
A key is a mechanical shape. It can be copied, picked, or defeated with a drill.
The I-24 authenticates with an encrypted electronic credential. Digital Guard Dawg's RFID platform uses Texas Instruments® chipsets with DFDE — Dual Frequency ~ Dual Encryption and over 6 billion unique codes.
